Rosemary Elliott
The mystical quality of light, colour and atmosphere surrounding the vast open Suffolk and Norfolk landscapes has been a constant source of inspiration to the artist since she moved to Wingfield, Suffolk in 2007. Although her work is predominately figurative, surreal qualities are evident in the more detailed works. Her most recent work features derelict abandoned barns in remote places, dark curving dykes and ditches and Norfolk seascapes.
The artist trained at Walthamstow School of Art and The Royal Academy Schools, London in the 1960’s. She was strongly influenced by the work of the Pop artists including Peter Blake, The Brotherhood of Ruralists, photorealism and the American artists Charles Sheeler and Andrew Wyeth. She has exhibited widely in East Anglia and London including Anthony Tooths and the Piccadilly Gallery, London W1.
When researching ideas for paintings she walks cross-country taking many photographs to gather detailed visual information. Using sections from different sources she pulls together a series of preparatory studies to finalise the composition. The skies are painted from direct observation from her studio which overlooks farmland with views to the River Waveney and South Norfolk.
